SPIRE wins 2016-17 Torch Award for Ethics

SPIRE Credit Union has been awarded the prestigious Better Business Bureau of Minnesota and North Dakota’s ® (BBB) 2016-17 Torch Award for Ethics! This award recognizes premier area businesses which display an outstanding level of ethics and integrity in all aspects of their day to day operations. Nominees submit an extensive award entry portfolio to BBB, where a panel of independent volunteer business and community leaders review the entries and choose the winners. This is a tremendous honor, and although awards are only a by-product of the work we do for SPIRE’s members, employees and communities, it is incredible for SPIRE. Every employee, board member, volunteer, and everyone who operates OUR credit union had a part in earning this recognition!
The BBB Torch Awards ceremony was held October 27 at the University of Minnesota. KOOL 108’s Lee Valsvik emceed the event, and over 300 people were in attendance.

As part of our 83rd Annual Meeting & Member Appreciation on February 18, 2017, we held a food drive, accepting donations for Second Harvest Heartland, one of the nation’s largest, most efficient and most innovative food banks.
Enough food and money was collected to provide nearly 1,400 meals for local families. “I am proud to work for a company that gives back in so many ways. It is both personally and professionally rewarding to see all the guests bring in donations to help others,” says SPIRE Controller, Mary Doyle (pictured above).

SPIRE has been presented with three Diamond Awards for Excellence, nationally recognizing outstanding marketing and business development achievements within the credit union industry.
The award winners were recognized at the 24th Credit Union National Association (CUNA) Marketing & Business Development Council annual conference. This national network, comprised of over 1,200 credit union marketing and business development professionals, gives out awards in 30 categories ranging from advertising to community events and beyond.
SPIRE Credit Union garnered recognition for their television advertising series, Annual Meeting Video, and Food Truck initiative.
Having received three previous national awards in the television category, their popular campaign, SPIRE: Driven by Midwestern Values, upholds and expands strong brand awareness and name recognition, as well as attracts new members. SPIRE has worked with Boom Creative to produce a series of TV spots for over seven years. The results feature authentic, unscripted testimonials with real members having casual conversations with their charismatic and approachable President/CEO, Dan Stoltz.
A promotional video was produced in order to commemorate the 2016 SPIRE Annual Meeting and Member Appreciation Day. Local sportscaster and keynote speaker, Joe Schmit talks about his personal values of persistence, purpose and passion, and ties that back to SPIRE’s culture. “I look at exactly what SPIRE does,” says Schmit, “Their main job is to help a lot of people. And when they help a lot of people through difficult and challenging times in their lives, the byproduct is success. And that’s that Midwestern value that Dan talks about.”
Officially launched July 2016, SPIRE brock ground with their Food Truck initiative. Not only have they rolled out one of the first “reverse” food trucks in the credit union industry, they launched a SPIRE Food Truck competition, and corresponding reality TV show in the Twin Cities metropolitan area.

In 2016 a few SPIRE employees worked with Elk River Deca students in developing a financial literacy program. On March 21, this program won 3rd place at the state competition, which means they are headed to nationals!
Also that day, SPIRE's President & CEO Dan Stoltz was awarded with the Outstanding Marketing Executive of the Year award. This prestigious award is given to individuals that have done an outstanding job in the field of marketing and distribution over the past year.

On October 15, the SPIRE Food Truck made its debut on Discover Delicious! This local reality TV show airs every Saturday morning on channel 29 at 11:30 AM. The show will follow the SPIRE Food Truck on its journey around local communities!
SPIRE has been on the search for a local chef to call the SPIRE Food Truck home for next year. After hosting a SPIRE Cook-Off Competition at CHS Field, they have finally been found. A local chef, Marcus, wowed the judges with his appetizers and entrees, winning the competition. Join the fun and follow Marcus, SPIRE, and the food truck on Discover Delicious.

For the second consecutive year, SPIRE Credit Union has been honored with a 2016 Desjardins Adult Financial Education Award. The award, sponsored by the Minnesota Credit Union Network (MnCUN) and the Credit Union National Association (CUNA), recognizes leadership within the credit union movement on behalf of adult financial literacy.
From July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016, the SPIRE Adult Financial Literacy Program reached a record-setting 640+ adults over 38+ classroom hours. Since its inception in 2008, SPIRE has reached 3,600+ individuals over 360+ classroom hours. Education was offered on a variety of financial topics including money management, budgeting, and skills necessary to for maintaining overall financial well-being. SPIRE worked with a variety of organizations in their outreach efforts: the Mora Workforce Center; Goodwill-Easter Seals; Minnesota Family Involvement Council, Central Minnesota Chapter of Credit Unions and the Minnesota Credit Union Network.
“SPIRE’s Adult Financial Literacy Program is based on our belief that, it is our duty to teach people in our communities the financial skills necessary to be successful throughout life,” says Dan Stoltz, President/CEO of SPIRE Credit Union. The Credit Union’s winning entry will advance to the national competition, where it will compete with financial education projects from credit unions in other states.
The award is named in honor of Alphonse Desjardins, the founder of the North American credit union movement, who established the first “caisse populaire” (people’s bank) in Quebec in 1900, and helped establish the first American credit union in New Hampshire in 1909. Desjardins was an ardent believer in the value of teaching children to save, and he promoted the idea of in-school savings programs.
