Sending money from a mobile payment app or over social media is quick and easy. Make sure you are actually sending money to the people you intend to receive it.
How it Works
Fraudsters pretend to be someone you know by texting from a different phone number or creating fake social media accounts. Others will message you and state they don't know you (or are a friend of a friend/family member) and ask for money. In either case, the thief often claims it is an emergency and needs the money right away to make you act fast and not question the request.
What To Do
First of all, don't send money to someone you don't know. If you get a request from someone you do know, contact them to confirm the request before you send money. Use a phone number or email address that you know is legitimate. Check your statements regularly and report and unauthorized transactions immediately.
