What are debit card holds?
When you use your debit card, if there are enough funds in your account to cover the transaction, an approval authorization is given by SPIRE. The balance in your checking account is reduced or “held” by the amount of the purchase; this is called a pre-authorization hold. The merchant determines the amount of the hold; SPIRE will determine the length of the hold. Typically the hold stays on your account until the funds are transferred to the merchant, up to three days. The funds on hold will not be available for withdrawal by ATM, teller transaction, check or ACH.
Debit card transactions are posted based on the available balance when it is presented for payment. Debit card transactions may clear your account at any time, any day of the week, including Saturday and Sunday.
Savings Only Visa® Debit Card Exception: Savings Only Visa® Debit Cards have lower daily spending and point of sale limits.
View your pending transactions online via Internet banking.
Pre-authorization hold example: The balance in your checking account is $1000. You use your debit card to make a grocery purchase for $100 and $50 at a department store. SPIRE places a hold on each transaction, so your available balance for future transactions would be $850.
